Do all electric vehicles use the same chargers?

There are many different charger brands that you can choose from. How do you know which is right for your vehicle? How do you know which public chargers will work with your vehicle? In this article, we will discuss the different types of chargers, and which are compatible with your vehicle.

What are the three types of charging?

There are three types of charging levels that are offered. There is level one, level two, and level three charging. (Link to the different levels of charging)

Most homes have a level one or level two charger. Level three chargers are not available for home use, and are only installed in commercial or public areas. They are most commonly used for a quick charge on the go or on a trip far from home.

Do all chargers have the same port?

In general, all electric vehicle charger ports are universal. EVs use the same port for level 1 and 2 chargers. There is one exception with Teslas; their supercharger stations are only compatible with Teslas. Because they have an incompatible port with other chargers, Tesla also sells an adaptor, allowing universal charging.

DC (level 3) charging ports do not always have universal ports. Nissan, Kia, Citroen, Honda, and others use a CHAdeMO port, while Volkswagen, BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Mercedes and Volvo use a CSS port.

How do I find compatible chargers near me?

There are several different apps that you can use to find a public charger near you when you are on the go. These different sites will show you where different chargers are located and if they are compatible with your vehicle.

●     ChargeHub- Available on the web and as an app.

●     Plugshare - Available on web and as an app. Commercial options are also available.
